Last day of the winter meetings in Nashville had a late spark as early in the morning Thursday December 7th, Padres and Yankees agreed on a historic trade that would send 25 year old star outfielder 3X all star/world series champion Juan Soto along with outfielder Trent Grisham to the Bronx in exchange for pitchers Michael King, Randy Vazquez, Jhony Brito, Drew Thrope and catcher Kyle Higashioka. After a disappointment year this season, the Yankees need to make a huge statement to win back their fans and they have done that so far. Before the Juan Soto trade happened, they also got outfielder Alex Verdugo from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for three pitchers.
The New York Yankees have revamped their outfield in a span of four days with these two trades with it look like Aaron Jude in center field, Juan Soto in right and Alex Verdugo in left right now. Soto is entering his final Year of the contract as he is looking to become a free agent after the 2024 season being a Scott Boras client. Yankees have the advantage when it comes to contract negotiations for Soto as they have the opportunity now to sell him on New York, what it means to be a Yankee and potentially doing something special with this team. Going into the off-season they needed left handed bats and accomplished it in a big way with Verdugo and Soto.
Brian Cashman, Hal Steinbrenner and rest of front office wanted to show fans that the Yankees are still that team from years back spending money and they are not done. Yankees will meet with Japanese star pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto on Monday which is a good sign for them that their are the first team to lead off. New York wanted to finalize the Juan Soto trade before going after Yamamoto so it could be a another factor to his decision. He would be a perfect fit to their rotation behind Gerrit Cole who won the Cy Young Award this year. They are looking at other options also as this team has new life and brand new energy going into next year.
It's safe to say that the Yankees and evil empire is officially back in New York fans.
