St. John Vianney Lady Lancers and Manasquan Warriors who are the two top teams in high school girls basketball faced off against each other in a huge Shore Conference Championship Game at Monmouth University yesterday. Lisa Kukoda and Dawn Karpell had their teams focused and ready to go. Manasquan and St. John Vianney has been dominant schools over the years now with great recruiting/consistent coaching. The Lady Lancers were looking for their fifth straight Shore Conference Championship Game which is unbelievable and remarkable. Can Manasquan break that streak or does St. John Vianney have another one in them, let's find out.
Katie Collins got things going early for Manasquan with a three pointer, setting the tone right away. Julia Karpell from SJV also started off strong by drawing a foul on Manasquan's defense which helped the Lady Lancers get going against the Warriors. Both teams were playing up tempo in beginning on both sides of the court but Manasquan all of a sudden were struggling big time on offense. Lady Lancers ended up going on a 7-0 run after that three pointer from Collins at the start. SJV had a 7-5 lead going into the second quarter against Manasquan.
SJV kicked it up to another level in second quarter as the Warriors continued to struggle on offense and had a tough time finding shots. Lady Lancers defense was outstanding in first half only holding Manasquan to 10 points. They had better ball movement in second quarter as Stella Lockhart started to get into the action drawing a foul. SJV did a great job of putting pressure and having Manasquan get into foul trouble. Lady Lancers had 10 point lead heading into halftime by a score of 20-10.
Manasquan Warriors made some key adjustments that helped have a big third quarter to get back onto this game. They outscored St John Vianney Lady Lancers 14-8 in that quarter with better flow to offense and great defense. SJV's offense started to go cold but still was up by four going into the fourth quarter. The Warriors cut the lead to 28-24 after being down by 10 at the half. Both teams struggled to find shots in fourth quarter as their defenses made it tough. SJV did a great job of not giving up their lead as the Warriors were trying to make one last run.
St. John Vianney Lady Lancers comes away with a 33-27 victory over Manasquan getting their fifth straight Shore Conference Championship Game at Monmouth University improving to 20-7 as a team. Their next game is on February 23rd against Camden Catholic at 5:00 Pm Eastern in the NJSIAA Tournament, First Round, South Jersey, Non-Public A.
