Before the game against Wall yesterday, St. John Vianney held a ceremony for their three seniors Gwen Bruen, Carolyn Lindy and coaches daughter Julia Karpell honoring them for all the contributions they made with this team. Lady Lancers had picture frames of them with the parents taking photos with each player that was honored underneath balloons that said 2024. After the ceremony, it was finally business between these two teams as they are both regarded the best in highschool girls basketball. Coaches Dawn Karpell and Colleen Wisher do a great job of getting their players prepared for each game.
St. John Vianney got off to a strong start early by Aleena Dinker setting the tone going up 5-0 but Wall started to get going from Shayne Eldridge who was fantastic the whole game. Lady Lancers had trouble stopping Eldridge no matter where she was on the court. The first quarter was close, hard fought, back and forth. SJV had multiple contributions early while Eldridge was going off for Wall at the same time. Lady Lancers had a 15-13 lead going into the second quarter where their defense played a little better and made it tougher on Eldridge.
Taylor Sofilkanich for SJV started to get going in second quarter getting rebounds, drawing fouls and second chance points. Wall struggled on defense in the second quarter as the rebounding department was a success for Lady Lancers. Dawn's daughter Julia Karpell got things going also for them as they were heating up from the three point line. Shayne Eldridge was still getting buckets at a high rate as her teammate Emily Tvrdik helped out also on the offensive side. This game was still close as SJV had a 31-24 lead going into halftime.
St. John Vianney outscored Wall 46-25 in the second half as they exploded in the third quarter getting 29 points while giving up 11. Julia Karpell, Madison Kocis, Daniella Matus, Taylor Sofilkanich, Stella Lockhart, Charlotte Bradley, Brooklyn Taylor and Aleena Dinker all made Huge contributions for the Lady Lancers in third/fourth quarters. Even they got some bench points from Tatum Sharpe, Carolyn Lundy and Gwen Bruen who is the senior. Wall had no answers but Shayne Eldridge was still competing at a high level and couldn't be stopped even though they were losing by a lot. SJV gets a dominant 77-49 victory over Wall as they improve to 14-6 on Senior night.
Lady Lancers next game is against St. Rose tomorrow January 31st at 5:00 Pm Eastern.
