Before Rutgers faced off against Michigan yesterday and during halftime, they did an amazing ceremony honoring the past teams in Rutgers women's basketball history over 50 seasons going thru each team that made an impact. This goes back to 1974 having some dominant teams, great coaches and fantastic moments that will be remembered forever. The Scarlet Knights is one of most historic colleges in sports when it comes to reliving past and honoring them in a special way. 50 seasons of history is just remarkable and incredible in my opinion with all the sustained success.
Scarlet Knights since first season in 1974, they have been noticed as a nationally elite program with a lot of success. Rutgers has gone to 26 NCAA Tournaments, four Sweet Sixteens, five Elite Eights, two Final Fours and an National Championship. Rutgers also had over 35 1,000 point scorers, four First Team All-Americans and 56 All-Conference Team Selections. This team also produced 24 alumni who have competed in the WNBA, six WNBA Champions, four Olympians and 11 USA Basketball members. Women's basketball has grown over the years at Rutgers as everyone wants to play here and love the atmosphere.
During the ceremony, Rutgers two Naismith Hall Of Fame coaches Theresa Grentz and C. Vivian Stringer were Mentioned as they both changed this program around building winning teams, positive foundation and culture that brought fans to the stands enjoying every game. Grentz was in attendance as she was getting interviewed by the Big Ten Network crew during the game talking about the history and ceremony. They also launched their 50 seasons website according to Rutgers Athletics where you can find it through photo and video galleries checking the timeline.
Even though Rutgers is not having the season they want right now at 6-15 and falling short yesterday to Michigan, head coach Coquese Washington who also played in WNBA winning a championship is also building the right way for this program. It will take time as the team is still young, growing as a group and trying to have a winning brand again. Shout-out to Rutgers Athletics for believing in their players from day one, giving them opportunities, bringing ones that want to win, play for Rutgers and fit the system. Before you know it they will be back to a winning program sooner then later getting experience in the Big Ten.
Destiny Adams, Mya Petticord and Jillian Huerter are the foundations right now for this year's team as they continue to grow and make teammates around them better in a positive way.
