Red Bank Catholic and Rumson-Fair Haven was expected to be a closer game then you think but RBC had different plans as they did something special as a team. RBC (14-2) who is led by head coach Joe Montano has been also one of the top teams in high school girls basketball with only one senior this season. Then you have Rumson-Fair Haven (9-6) led by head coach Dave Callahan with nine seniors on their team is not having a type of season that they are expected to have even though three games over 500. Both teams have experience which makes this an interesting matchup.
Rumson-Fair Haven had a great first quarter scoring 10 points but after that it was only single digits rest of the way for them. Red Bank Catholic's defense was tenacious, didn't give up on any plays, took advantage of their mistakes and won every quarter with their high percentage shots. The first quarter was a close game which was expected with both teams shooting the ball well and getting to the free throw line. RBC had a 14-10 lead going into the second quarter and this game could go either way. Rumson just needed a spark from the offensive side more because RBC just kept on dominating.
Katie Liggio for RBC was having a great game early as she set the tone for them that led her teammates Tessa Liggio, Sophie Smith, Tessa Carman, Christina Liggio and Addy Nyemchek getting involved also. They went on a scoring outburst in the second quarter which helped their defense stay focused even more against Rumson. RBC was not going to allow easy shots at all as they did a great job of switching whenever Rumson kept passing the ball around and didn't have any answers. RBC extended the lead to 13 by a score of 31-18 heading into halftime.
Red Bank Catholic dominated the second half big time outscoring Rumson 35-17 and putting the game away real quick. RBC starting to have success on the rebounding side by Tessa Carman who was a beast down low. Carman kept getting offensive rebounds which led to drawing fouls. Rumson had no answers for her and couldn't really recover from that. Then Addy Nyemchek from RBC got going after having a rough first half. Once Nyemchek gets in the flow then she can't be stopped. They also were lights out from the three point line against Rumson's defense.
RBC gets their 7th straight win of the season as they routed Rumson 66-35 and improving to 14-2. Their next game is against Long Island Lutheran (NY) tomorrow at 2:15 Pm Eastern.
