Ranney girls basketball faced off against one of the top teams in Southern yesterday with Southern being the favorite in this game. This was a big matchup for Ranney as a confidence booster and they have been playing around 500 basketball throughout this whole season. Southern has been dominant in their games as a team with great young talent. Players to watch in this huge matchup were Casey Collins, Samantha Russell, Brielle Romano and Skylar Soltis for Southern. Ranney had Haley Poser, Ashley Kreiger, and Emily Cavanaugh.
Southern got things going first on the offensive side first but that's all they got as Ranney started to heat up. They did a great job of drawing fouls, creating turnovers, offensive rebounds, unbelievable defense and finding their shots. Southern couldn't get anything going after that early basket which lead to a 13-0 run from Ranney ending the first quarter with all momentum and confidence. It was a surprise that Southern went cold early with their top players Casey Collins, Samantha Russell, Brielle Romano ana Skylar Soltis struggling big time. Ranney did a great job matching up on defense and forcing tough shots.
Ranney had a 13-2 lead going into the second quarter with Ashley Kreiger and Haley Poser making early contributions. Then Ranney stepped it up to another notch with their hot shooting and outstanding defense. Southern still had trouble on the offensive side as they only scored 6 in second quarter. Ranney just kept pouring it on making Southern's defense look bad and out of sync which rarely happens. The rebounding for Ranney was biggest difference in this game as Ashley Kreiger got most of it. Southern was down 33-8 at halftime as they needed to make big time adjustments in order for a comeback to happen.
Southern did a better job on defense holding Ranney to single digits points in third and fourth quarters outscoring them 23-15 during second half. Ranney did struggle a little on offense but still did a good job on defense even though Southern made two late runs. Casey Collins started to heat up in second half for Southern but still wasn't enough for a win. Ranney held on for a huge victory over Southern with a score of 48-31 improving to 12-10 underneath coach Katelyn linney and Southern falls to 18-6. This is a motivating win for Ranney as their next game is not till February 23rd against Holy Cross Prep with time still to be decided.
