Montclair Women's Basketball hosted Hunter College yesterday at the Panzer Athletic Center trying to improve on their 1-4 record. Hunter College was trying to go 500 this season but this game had something to give for both teams when it comes to getting momentum back. Hunter College and Montclair was hitting their warm-up shots before the game which would translate between them two. Can Montclair come away with home court advantage or will Hunter College spoil it.
It has high intensity from the start as both teams had success getting great looks at the basket with Hunter College hitting most of their three pointers early. They kept going back and fourth, forcing turnovers but Montclair had trouble against Alexa Charles who set the tone right away for Hunter College. Montclair was able to keep up with the shooting as they were leading 21-19 heading into the second quarter. Shannon Hughes also was the tone setter for Montclair as Charles and Hughes were trading baskets at one point.
Hunter College dominated the second quarter as their shooting continued to be at a high rate against Montclair's defense. They kept hitting the three pointers, getting to the basket and drawing fouls. Montclair had trouble on defense but was still shooting the ball well. Hunter College only gave up 18 points in the second quarter while scoring 25 which helped lead at halftime 44-39 and have the momentum. Montclair needed to improve on defense, cut down on the turnovers and look more opportunities at the basket to draw some more fouls.
The second half was a big difference for Montclair as they played better on defense and continued to shoot the ball. They outscored Hunter College 44-35 in second half as it was enough to beat them 83-79 which had a crazy ending. In order for Montclair to come away with the victory, they had to continue putting up points against Hunter College and stop Alexa Charles who had a fantastic game. With a much needed win, Montclair women's basketball improves to 2-4 on the season as they get ready for their conference game tomorrow.
