Late night Big Ten showdown yesterday between Maryland Terrapins and Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Jersey Mike's Arena. Terrapins were 12-10 while Rutgers was 7-17 coming into this matchup. Coaches Brenda Frese and Coquese Washington are two of the most respected hard working leaders in women's basketball. Some key players to watch out for in this game were Shyanne Sellers, Brinae Alexander, Jakia Brown-Turner, Faith Masonius, Bri McDaniel for Maryland. For Rutgers it was Destiny Adams, Jillian Huerter and Lisa Thompson.
Maryland Terrapins got off to a strong start getting an early basket from Shyanne Sellers and their defense forcing a turnover right away. Destiny Adams did a great job of setting the tone early for the Scarlet Knights offense. Both teams drew some fouls going to the basket and forcing the defense to adjust more. Adams was a beast near the basket for Rutgers as she kept getting calls from Terrapins defense but couldn't convert on some of the free throws. Sellers was outstanding for Maryland especially early in this game. Terrapins had a 16-11 lead going into the second quarter where both teams started to heat up.
The three pointers were incorporated more between these two teams in second half as their intensity definitely picked and felt more comfortable. Maryland did a great job of extending their lead whenever Rutgers tried to make a run. Faith Masonius, Bri McDaniel, Jakia Brown-Turner Brinae Alexander and Lisa Thompson started to get going in this game. Both teams were feasting on rebounds but the Terrapins did have the upper hand in that category. Maryland had a 37-28 lead heading into halftime where Rutgers felt like they were all in this game with some key adjustments needed.
Maryland Terrapins stepped it up on defense in third quarter as Rutgers Scarlet Knights did have a tough time to get going with their defense while Destiny Adams was still in rhythm. But they got big three pointers from Jillian Huerter who has been struggling whole game but she did finally find her sweet spot in second half for Rutgers. Terrapins were leading 54-41 going into the fourth quarter. Scarlet Knights did a better job in this quarter with defense, knocking down key shots, keeping it close but still wasn't enough for them to win. Maryland Terrapins improves to 13-10 this season while Rutgers fall to 7-18.
Maryland Terrapins next game is Superbowl Sunday February 11th against Illinois at 3:00 Pm Eastern.
