Ranney girls basketball and Holy Cross Prep had a NJSIAA Tournament First Round South Jersey Non-Public B matchup yesterday against each other. Holy Cross ws 15-13 coming into this game while Ranney were 13-10 as they get ready for a big moment. Both teams can shoot the ball but Ranney does have the size and length advantage when it comes rebounding which would be one of the keys. Players to watch for Holy Cross is Molly Frith and Julia Zimmerman, Ashley Kreiger, Haley Poser, Katie Renaud and Claire Doherty for Ranney.
Junior Haley Poser gots things going for Ranney while senior Jessica Wojnar did the same thing for Holy Cross. Both teams were driving to the basket early to establish the inside and eventually find ways to draw fouls. Ashley Kreiger who is only a freshman for Ranney did a fantastic job rebounding the ball which helped her get second chance points right away. Holy Cross defense did a great job in first quarter but Ranney started to open up and spread the floor more. They had a 9-5 lead heading into the second quarter where things changed dramatically for Holy Cross.
Ranney started to pull away in second quarter as everyone was starting to make their shots including Ashley Kreiger who couldn't be stopped pretty much the whole game. Junior Katie Renaud got into the scoring party as she was hitting her three pointers at a high rate. Holy Cross had nothing in second quarter, were not getting to their assignments and let Ranney go on a massive run. Ranney outscored them 17-6 in this quarter with defense, shooting, drawing fouls, playing more up tempo and making key adjustments. Ranney had a 26-11 lead at halftime leaving Holy Cross concerned.
Holy Cross had a much better third quarter as they made a run cutting the lead to half at one point bringing back their confidence. Ranney's shooting was still an issue for Holy Cross as Junior Claire Doherty got involved in the party. Junior Moly Frith and Junior Julia Zimmerman tried hard to Keep Holy Cross in this game but the defense still couldn't stop Ranney. They had a 46-29 lead going into the fourth quarter where it was tough for Holy Cross to overcome. Ranney finished the last quarter on a 14-3 run as they get a dominant 60-32 victory over Holy Cross.
Ranney improves to 14-10 underneath head coach Katelyn linney and their next game will be against Wildwood Catholic on Monday February 26th in the NJSIAA Tournament Quarterfinal Round South Jersey Non-Public B.
